The best restaurants in Umag are spread between the old town on its peninsula, the resort areas to the north and the villages inland. This guide, compiled in September 2026, picks ten addresses, with what to order and roughly what it costs.
Where to eat in Umag: old town, Nova obala, Katoro and Savudrija
Umag is the first larger town after the Slovenian border, so summer guests come from Italy, Slovenia, Austria and Germany and menus are multilingual. Most tables are packed into the old town: around Trg slobode, the main square with the parish church, and along Riječka and Garibaldi streets, where terraces face the sea and the sunset. Nova obala, the promenade with a view of the harbour, follows the bay. A few kilometres north begin Katoro and Stella Maris, a zone of hotels, apartments and tennis courts with its own row of restaurants. Further on lie Bašanija and Savudrija with its lighthouse from 1818, and inland is Sveta Marija na Krasu, a drive away, with quieter tables and easy parking.
How the list was put together
The jelo.hr directory currently lists 17 active venues in Umag. The ten with the strongest combination of rating and number of guest reviews made the list, kept varied: seafront konobas, a pizzeria on the main square, fish and grill on Nova obala, two addresses in Katoro and two outside town. We found no Michelin or Gault&Millau distinctions for these venues, so the guests decide. Nobody from jelo.hr has sat at these tables; we judge the selection and the offer from publicly available sources. Venues without a single rating in the database were left out.
Season, ATP week and reservations
High season runs from mid-June to early September and peaks in the second half of July, when the ATP tournament is played at Stella Maris and the town is at its fullest. For dinner on a seafront terrace, book at least a day ahead then. Off-season some terraces close, but the food calendar goes on: in October and November the restaurants of north-western Istria hold the Days of Sole (Dani švoja), dedicated to the sole of Savudrija, and over the year come the days of squid, shellfish and asparagus.
