1. La Fondiaria Restaurant Rovinj, Iza Kasarne 14

The safest choice for dinner in the old town when you want a plate somebody has thought about. La Fondiaria sits at Iza Kasarne 14, a few steps from the waterfront, and holds a 4.8 rating on Google from more than 800 reviews. The kitchen is Mediterranean with an Istrian accent: grilled octopus, scampi risotto with saffron, black cuttlefish risotto, tuna tartare with avocado and truffle pasta.

Open daily from noon to midnight. The terrace is small, so in summer book at least a day ahead on 099 208 4881. There is no published price list; guests describe it as a restaurant for a special dinner, and jelo.hr recommends it.

2. Pizzeria Orlando Rovinj, Venerio Rossetto 5

The longest-serving pizzeria on this list, open since 1997. Pizzeria Orlando is a family-run place at Venerio Rossetto 5, about ten minutes' walk from the old town, with a covered terrace and a wood-fired oven. Besides pizza, with the Diavola mentioned most often, there is homemade pasta, grilled squid and meat dishes. The Fiorentina with fries is the priciest item on the menu, around 25 euros.

The best address for Neapolitan pizza five minutes from the waterfront. The dough is Neapolitan, with a raised rim, and the menu includes vegetarian and vegan pizzas.

Dinner for two with drinks comes to around 40 euros. It serves until midnight, and at peak season the queue forms quickly because there are few terrace tables. A good choice when you want to eat in the centre without waterfront prices; the phone number is 052 880 066.

4. Artičoka, Augusta Ferri 25

The most creative kitchen in town, hidden halfway up a staircase at Augusta Ferri 25. Artičoka has no street terrace, so it is easy to miss; inside is a former storeroom with an open kitchen. Owner Marco and his team treat Istrian tradition differently: squid with pistachios is the signature, alongside octopus terrine, scallop risotto and risotto with kulen sausage. The 4.9 rating from almost 360 reviews is the highest on this list.

Open Monday to Saturday evenings, from 6 to 11 pm; closed on Sundays. Prices are above average, and a booking on 091 518 1229 is essential because the room is small.

5. Scuba restaurant, Obala Pina Budicina

The fish restaurant on the waterfront that fills first and empties last. 6. Konoba Jure, Cademia 22

A konoba for the kind of Istrian lunch eaten at home, in a residential district outside the tourist core. Konoba Jure at Cademia 22 has the most reviews on this list, almost 1,900, with a 4.5 rating. The menu is homestyle: pljukanci with scampi and mussels, steak with truffles, grilled fish, a starter of eggs and anchovies, and homemade cakes. The terrace seats 25, the interior another 40.

Open from noon to 10 pm, closed on Wednesdays. Expect 20 to 45 euros per person. In summer a booking on 052 813 397 is a must because locals fill it too.

How to choose among these six

First decide between the waterfront and a lane. The waterfront gives you the view and usually charges for it. The lanes behind the church and around Vrata pod zidom offer a quieter table and often better cooking for the same money: La Fondiaria and Artičoka are the examples. Konoba Jure is outside the core and easier on the wallet, but you have to look for it.

Then book. In July and August seaside tables are gone by 7 pm; in September a call the day before is usually enough, except at weekends. Watch the opening days too: Konoba Jure is closed on Wednesdays, Artičoka on Sundays, and Orlando opens only at 5 pm. Agree fish by the kilo before it goes on the grill, with the price per kilogram and the weight; most bad reviews in town are about surprises on the bill.
