Gradska kavana Arsenal Restaurant

Gradska kavana Arsenal has been open since 1895 in the building of the former Arsenal, a medieval shipyard, between the Rector's Palace and the Sponza Palace. It has two terraces: one looks onto Stradun and Luža, the other, under stone arches, onto the old harbour, St John's Fortress and the Lazareti. The cuisine is Mediterranean with an emphasis on fish, and the restaurant is part of the Nautika group.

The menu includes crni rižot (black cuttlefish risotto), brudet (fish stew), dagnje na buzaru (mussels in a white wine and garlic sauce), sipa na crno (cuttlefish in its own ink) and grilled squid, and for breakfast eggs benedict and a croissant with burrata. Prices are above those of the surrounding restaurants, and the list of Croatian wines is long.

Open every day from 8 am to 11 pm, from morning coffee to dinner. Reservations can be made online, and for the harbour terrace in the evening they are necessary; phone 020 321 202. Guests in reviews praise the view from the terrace, the fresh and nicely presented fish and the friendly staff.
