Mala Hiža

Mala Hiža operates in an oak house from 1887, dismantled near Zagreb and reassembled in 1997 in an abandoned orchard in Mačkovec, four kilometres north of Čakovec. The chef and owner is Branimir Tomašić, whom Gault&Millau named chef of the year for traditional cuisine in 2018; the restaurant today holds a rating of 16 out of 20, and the Michelin Guide has recommended it eight years in a row.

On the plate are Međimurje classics in a new reading: štrukli (cheese-filled pastry) stuffed with fresh cheese and asparagus, porcini soup, homemade trganci (small hand-torn dumplings) with spring vegetables, slow-roasted rabbit and pumpkin-seed ice cream. The wine list gives the most space to winemakers from Međimurje. Štrukli cost 7.90 €, soups 7.80 €, trganci 21.90 €, rabbit 28.90 €, and the aged Black Slavonian pork chop 56 €.

On Sundays they are open until 4 pm. The most sought-after dishes can sell out, so reservations are recommended. Guests most often mention in reviews the atmosphere of the old wooden house and the homemade ingredients.
