Zlatne Gorice
Zlatne Gorice stands on a hilltop among the vineyards of Varaždin Breg, about ten minutes' drive from the centre of Varaždin, on an estate with its own vineyard and wine museum. The Michelin Guide has included it in its selection, and according to the Varaždinski bregi Tourist Board it has received the Bib Gourmand for the fourth time; Gault&Millau gives it 13.5 out of 20 points.
The kitchen is led by chef Anđelko Pomper, and the foundation is produce from local family farms: a platter of cured meats and cheeses, goose liver on bruschetta with apricot spread, rump steak stuffed with home-cured ham and cheese, venison paprikaš (paprika stew) with trganci (small hand-torn dumplings) made from pumpkin-seed flour, and husarski biftek (Hussar-style beef fillet) with home-cured bacon, smoked ham, onion and chilli. The price range is mid-level.
In summer meals are served under a large pavilion with a view of the hills, in winter in a dining room that is a frequent venue for celebrations. They are closed on Mondays, open until 6 pm on Sundays, reservations are recommended at weekends, and parking is on the estate.
